A prescribing pharmacist is a licensed pharmacist with Additional Prescribing Authorization (APA) — extra training and certification that allows them to prescribe medications, not just dispense them. Alberta has one of the broadest pharmacist prescribing scopes in Canada, and has allowed pharmacist prescribing longer than any other province.
Our prescribing pharmacists can assess and prescribe for minor illnesses, adjust existing prescriptions when needed, and step in during urgent situations — often without you needing to book a separate doctor’s appointment. They work alongside your physician or nurse practitioner rather than in place of them, keeping your care team coordinated.
This matters most when access to a doctor is limited: a prescribing pharmacist can often see you faster, and can monitor and adjust your medications as your treatment progresses.
Additionally, prescribing pharmacists may have certain restrictions or limitations on their prescribing authority, so our pharmacist may ask the client for certain tests such as strep throat test, UTI test, blood work, or culture sensitivity test before he prescribes for certain conditions.
