Pharmacist reviewing medications with a patient

Who benefits from a review

  • Anyone taking several medications, especially three or more prescriptions from more than one prescriber.
  • After a change: a hospital stay, a new diagnosis, a new medication or a change in dose.
  • If something feels off: side effects, dizziness, poor sleep, or a medication that does not seem to be working.
  • Seniors and caregivers managing a complex daily schedule.
  • Anyone using supplements or over-the-counter products alongside prescriptions; these interact more often than people expect.

What we review

  • Purpose: what each medication is for, and whether you still need it.
  • Dose and timing: whether each dose is right for you and taken at the best time of day.
  • Interactions: between prescriptions, over-the-counter products, supplements, food and alcohol.
  • Side effects: what you are experiencing and what can be done about it.
  • Practicalities: missed doses, cost, swallowing difficulties, and whether compliance packaging would help.
  • Vaccines and screening you may be due for.

What happens during a review

  1. Bring everything you take, including over-the-counter products, vitamins, supplements and inhalers, in their original containers.
  2. We go through them together in our private consultation room: purpose, proper use, side effects and interactions.
  3. You leave with a written plan: an up-to-date medication list and clear, personal recommendations.
  4. We follow up with your doctor on any changes we recommend, and with you to see how things are going.

Cost

Comprehensive medication reviews are covered by Alberta Health for eligible Albertans, typically people taking several chronic medications. If you do not qualify for a funded review, we tell you before we start; many patients still find a short paid review worthwhile.

Questions

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No. Book a medication review online or ask at the counter. We send your doctor a summary afterwards so everyone is on the same page.

Is a medication review free?

Reviews are funded by Alberta Health for eligible Albertans, usually people taking several ongoing medications. We confirm your eligibility when you book.

What should I bring?

Everything you take, including over-the-counter products, vitamins and supplements, in their original containers, plus your Alberta Personal Health Card and a list of questions.

Can I bring a family member?

Yes. Caregivers are welcome, and many families find the review easier when someone else can take notes.
