Prescription renewals

Out of refills, or can’t get in to see your doctor? Our prescribing pharmacists can renew many ongoing prescriptions right away, so your treatment continues without a gap.

What we can renew

  • Ongoing medications for stable conditions: blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid, asthma and COPD inhalers, acid reflux, contraception and many more.
  • Prescriptions that have expired or run out of refills while you wait for a doctor's appointment.
  • Emergency supplies if you have run out, lost your medication, or are away from home.
  • Dose adjustments when a treatment needs fine-tuning, with your doctor kept informed.

How it works

  1. Visit, call, or book online before you run out; a few days' notice is ideal.
  2. Quick assessment: the pharmacist reviews your medication history, how the treatment is working and whether any monitoring is due.
  3. Renewal when appropriate, filled on the spot, with a note sent to your doctor.

What it costs

Pharmacist prescription renewals are covered by Alberta Health for Albertans with a valid health card. The medication itself is billed to your drug plan as usual.

Some medications, including controlled substances and those that need regular monitoring or a physical examination, cannot be renewed by a pharmacist. If that applies to you, we tell you straight away and help you arrange a doctor's visit.
